Description
The Two Row Wampum Belt is a foundational wampum belt among the Haudenosaunee. The belt embodies a philosophy that not only describes the relationship we desire with the Colonists, but also the relationship we have with all living things. It is one of the first agreements made with the Europeans when they arrived on our shores. 1n 1613, the Haudenosaunee created this belt to describe the relationship we wished to establish with the Dutch. We were to stay in our canoe and they were to stay in the ships - each parallel to one another and equal. We did not desire a subservient relationship. It is that those who choose to live with one foot in the canoe and one foot in the ship are doomed to fall into the water. It is our responsibilities to ensure we follow the path laid out for us by creation.
