Description
The Two Row Wampum Belt was one of the very first treaties created between the Natives of Turtle Island and the Europeans. This Wampum Belt was created between the Haudenosaunee and the Dutch in 1613 and depicts a notion of mutual respect and seperate but equal co-existence. The laws, customs, and ways of the Haudenosaunee are to travel through the river of life in one row, and the laws, customs, and ways of the non-Natives down the other row. This important concept set the basis for all other treaties.
